What is Thread Rolling Operation?

Thread rolling is a metalworking process that involves forming screw threads on a workpiece by rolling or pressing it between two dies. In this operation, a cylindrical blank of the workpiece is rotated between the two dies, which have the reverse form of the desired thread shape.

The dies have ridges that are pressed into the workpiece, displacing the material and forming the thread. The thread is formed by the material flowing into the shape of the die ridges. This process is also known as cold forming or cold working, as the metal is not heated during the operation.

Thread rolling has several advantages over other methods of forming threads, such as cutting or grinding. It produces threads with greater strength and fatigue resistance, and the process is faster and more efficient than other methods. Additionally, thread rolling can be used to form threads in a variety of materials, including steel, aluminum, brass, and titanium.

Thread rolling is commonly used in the production of bolts, screws, nuts, and other threaded fasteners. It is also used in the automotive, aerospace, and construction industries, among others, to produce high-quality threaded components.
