What is Surface Grinding Machine ?

A Surface grinding machine is a machine tool used to provide precision ground surfaces, either to a critical size or for the surface finish. The typical precision of a surface grinding machine is 0.00005 inches (0.001 mm). The machine consists of a table that traverses both longitudinally and across the face of the wheel. The wheel head assembly holds the grinding wheel and has provision for translating or rotating the wheel relative to the workpiece. The workholding device holds the workpiece against the rotating wheel and supports it during the grinding process. Surface grinding is used to produce a smooth finish on flat surfaces. It is a widely used abrasive machining process in which a spinning wheel covered in rough particles (grinding wheel) cuts chips of metallic or nonmetallic substance from a workpiece, making a face of it flat or smooth.
