What is Stainless Steel Braided Hydraulic Hoses?

Stainless steel braided hydraulic hose = a flexible pressure line built as a tube + stainless-steel wire braid(s) + end fittings.
It’s used where the medium, temperature, or environment would damage ordinary rubber/steel-wire hoses.

Construction

  • Inner tube: either PTFE (for very wide temperature & chemicals) or synthetic rubber/thermoplastic (for general hydraulics).
  • Reinforcement: one or two layers of 304/316 stainless-steel wire braid wrapped at a controlled braid angle. The braid:
    • carries the hoop stress from internal pressure,
    • limits volumetric expansion (keeps actuators responsive),
    • adds kink/abrasion/fire resistance,
    • gives excellent corrosion resistance.
  • Cover (optional): clear PVC, silicone, or additional braid for abrasion/fire protection.
  • Fittings: crimped or swaged couplings (JIC, NPT, BSPP, ORFS, flange, etc.); assemblies are pressure-tested.

Typical performance (varies by size/design)

  • Working pressure: ~70–420 bar (1,000–6,000 psi) for single/double braid; burst ≥ 4× WP.
  • Temperature:
    • PTFE core: −70 to +260 °C, excellent chemical compatibility (fuels, oils, solvents, steam).
    • Elastomer core: ~−40 to +100/125 °C.
  • Vacuum: PTFE + SS braid can handle full vacuum in many sizes.
  • Electrical options: carbon-filled (antistatic) PTFE for hydrocarbon service.

Where it’s used

High-temp/chemical hydraulic lines, hot oil and fuel, steam, brake/test stands, offshore/food/pharma where wash-down and corrosion are concerns.

When to choose it vs. other hoses

  • Choose SS braided for: corrosion resistance, very high/low temperatures, minimal expansion, chemical duty, compact bend radius.
  • Prefer spiral steel-wire rubber hoses for: extreme impulse shock on heavy equipment (longer impulse life, lower cost).

Selection checklist

  1. Fluid & temperature (need PTFE? antistatic?).
  2. Working & peak pressures (match size and braid layers to SAE/EN ratings).
  3. Minimum bend radius & routing (avoid torsion; use supports).
  4. Environment (316 SS in chlorides; add protective cover if abrasive).
  5. End connections & assembly crimp spec.

A one-line spec example:
1/2 in PTFE hose, 316 SS double braid, WP 275 bar, T −70…+260 °C, antistatic liner, JIC-37° female x ORFS, hydrotest @ 1.5× WP per SAE J517.
