What is Spline Rolling Machine?
A spline rolling machine is a type of cold forming machine used to create splines (ridges or teeth) on cylindrical workpieces. This process is known as spline rolling or cold roll forming of spline.
How it works:
Spline rolling machines typically use two or three cylindrical dies that rotate in a precise phase relationship. The workpiece is fed between the dies, and the dies roll the desired spline form onto the workpiece under pressure.
Advantages:
- Improved surface finish: Spline rolling produces excellent surface finishes due to the cold working process.
- Increased strength: The grain flow in the workpiece is improved during rolling, resulting in increased shear strength.
- Reduced material waste: It’s a “chipless” process, meaning no material is removed as chips, reducing waste and material requirements.
- High productivity: Spline rolling is a fast and efficient process suitable for mass production.
Applications:
Splines are used in various applications where torque transmission and precise fit are required, such as:
- Automotive transmission shafts
- Gears
- Machine tools
- Agricultural equipment
- Construction machinery
