This is a simultaneous 5-axis Deckel Maho CNC Universal Machining Center.
This is not a 3+2 machine,
this is a full 5-axis machine.
This means that it’s able to move rotary axis not only for positioning, but for simultaneous 5-axis machining. This machine was intended for precision mold-work and one-off prototyping work. This is not a production machine, it doesn’t have a chip conveyor. What it does have however, are Heidenhain linear glass scales on all axes including the rotary axes which makes it much more precise than standard servo-encoder machines.

If you are a job-shop looking for quick part turn-around this is not a machine for you.
But if you’re doing precision one-off, prototyping or mold work this machine is ideal.
Especially considering the fact that to get a newer 5-axis with glass-scales you’re looking at multiples of hundreds of thousands now.

This machine has tool changer umbrellas which were problematic straight from Deckel Maho. They were cast and easy to break and some of them are broken on this machine as well.
Many people have fabricated their own (they cost $2500 from DMG), this was my plan as well but I never got around to doing it mainly because I never got the shop door modified to accept this machine (it’s 9ft tall, keep that in mind!). It’s been sitting in the storage for years, the batteries will be dead but all the parameters are included on discs along with complete documentation that comes with the machine. Also the display takes a while to turn on, which is another common issue with these (new one is less than $1000). Mechanically it’s in great shape, it never did any production work, it came from a mold shop.
