The flycutting milling process is technically similar to grinding with cup wheels, whereby, instead of the bonded diamond grain, a single-point diamond tool with geo-metric-specific cutting edge is used. Machine-cutting processes that use ultra-precision air-bearing technology for the machining spindle and the workpiece stage produce mirror surfaces in excellent optical quality on suitable materials. The more than 25 years experience in the design and construction of this type of machine tools with aerostatic bearings forms the foun-dation for the exceptionally high reputation of KUGLER® precision machine-building. The surface finish that can be achieved is in the range of a few nanometers, or even lower than one nanometer (Ra value) for suitable materials such as oxygen-free copper. Geometry accuracy is in the sub-micrometer range, often even about 50 nanometers (peak-to-valley values). The Kugler Flycutter F1000-2X is an ultraprecise, CNC controlled 2-axis milling machine with aerostatic bearings, which is specially designed and optimized for the demands of ultraprecision machining according to the flycutting method. The machine is characterized by thermally stable assembly sections made from natural granite (machine base, Z column, X rail), carriage assemblies with aerostatic bearings, high stiffness, machine tool spindles with aerostatic bearings and machine integrated measurement technology. The primary scope of application is the 2D ultraprecision machining of even geometries on non-ferrous metals with monocrystalline single point diamond tools for the production of surfaces with optical quality (evenness tolerance < 0.5µm / Ø100mm; roughness Ra < 5nm). 2D-ultraprecision machining of materials: Non-ferrous metals (Cu, Al and Cu alloys, chem. Ni), semiconductor materials (Si, Ge, etc.), polymers and plastics (e.g. PMMA, polycarbonate, acrylic glass), certain optical crystals, mirrors with Cu and Al substrates (metal optics) 2D-ultraprecision machining of components: Scanner polygons, optical lattices, reflectors, light fittings, electrical contact surfaces, partial stages for wafer processing, mechanical sealing elements, elements for heat dissipation, heat sinks, precision-mechanical components, plexiglass windows for airplanes, plexiglass sections for residential use, guide elements and spindle sleeves for coordinate measuring machines
